DIGITALLY DRIVEN: OPTIMIZING IDS WORKFLOWS THROUGH AUTOMATION AND STANDARDIZATION

Section 1: From Requests to Results: Leveraging REDCap for Workflow Automation

Section 2: Form to Table: Driving Efficiency in the Drug Build Process

Investigational Drug Services (IDS) play a critical role in the operational success of clinical research, yet many workflows still rely on paper-based and/or manual processes. This session explores two separate digital improvement initiatives: automating intake and communication workflows using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) and streamlining the drug build process by transitioning from Word-based documents to a structured Excel-based investigational drug build form. Attendees will gain insights into how thoughtful process redesign, leveraging technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration can reduce errors, improve documentation, enhance data communication, and significantly cut down on time spent managing investigational protocols. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to evaluate and implement digital tools within their own IDS operations.

Upon completion of this session, Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians will be able to:

    • Identify opportunities for digital workflow optimization in investigational drug services using tools like REDCap and Excel-based documentation.

    • Describe the limitations of traditional IDS processes and explain how transitioning to structured, digital systems can reduce manual errors and increase efficiency.

    • Demonstrate how interdepartmental collaboration between pharmacy and informatics teams can drive successful implementation of new digital tools.

    • Evaluate strategies for integrating standardized tools into local IDS workflows, including potential barriers and customization needs.

Attendees can earn up to 1 live hour of Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) credits per session. CE session must be attend live to receive credit.

The Investigational Insights Sessions were developed with the support of The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education’s Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (OICPD). The OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
